Dual Waste and Recycling Smart Chute System Installation

50 Quay Street is a landmark build-to-rent residential development by J Hutchinson, located on the edge of the Brisbane CBD overlooking the Brisbane River. Developed by Cedar Pacific in partnership with the Queensland Government, the 32-storey tower delivers 475 apartments.

Elephants Foot Chute Solutions supplied and installed a dual chute system for J Hutchinson, servicing chute pipe levels from level 05 through to the rooftop level, with acoustic lagging fitted to chute sections to manage noise transfer. Each servicing level is fitted with fire-rated self-closing intake doors across both waste and recycling streams, upgraded to Smart Chute functionality with electronic door locking, in-use and fault indication, full bin detection, and blockage identification managed via the control box HMI.

The system is also integrated with the building’s BMS, providing fault, blockage, and bin status signals, along with an SMS alert function that notifies the caretaker directly of any system issues. At the discharge room on level 04, major offset discharge configurations serve both streams, with a custom linear compactor system managing the waste stream and a custom linear system managing recycling, each to four 1100L bins. Embelton NRD isolation mounts are fitted to ceiling-mounted waste room equipment in the discharge room for acoustic performance.

The completed installation gives 50 Quay Street a compliant, technology-enabled waste and recycling solution suited to a high-density build-to-rent environment, reducing manual handling and giving building management real-time visibility over system performance.
