Normanby Road Apartments is a medium to high‑density residential development delivered by Crema Spa in Melbourne’s Southbank precinct. Located within a mixed‑use urban environment close to transport and essential services, the project required a robust and scalable waste management solution capable of supporting high daily resident volumes while maintaining acoustic comfort and long‑term operational reliability.
To meet these requirements, Elephants Foot Chute Solutions supplied and installed a large‑scale dual waste and recycling chute system, designed to efficiently manage separate waste streams while supporting safe, compliant, and low‑maintenance building operations.
The system incorporates 510mm galvanised steel chute pipes servicing levels Mezzanine through to Level 35. All chute sections are fitted with upgraded acoustic lagging, reducing noise transfer between floors and improving resident comfort in a high‑rise residential environment.
Fire‑rated, self‑closing waste and recycling intake doors are installed from Levels 6 to 35, providing safe and intuitive access for residents while maintaining fire and smoke separation. Bypass levels are incorporated on lower floors to suit the building layout and waste strategy, ensuring operational efficiency across the full height of the tower.
At the top of the system, dedicated odour relief vent and wash‑down cleaning systems provide continuous airflow and automated internal cleaning. These systems assist with odour control, hygiene, and long‑term protection of the chute interior under high‑use conditions.
At ground level, waste and recycling are discharged via medium‑offset discharge systems into 1100L mobile garbage bins. Both waste streams are supported by linear bin handling systems, integrating seamlessly with the building’s residential waste management system and enabling efficient servicing while minimising manual handling.
