The Cambridge – ILU & RAC Waste, Recycling and Linen Chute Systems

The Cambridge is a multi‑building residential development delivered by Richard Crookes Construction within Sydney’s north‑west growth corridor. Located close to rail, retail and local services, the project supports medium to high‑density apartment living across Independent Living Units (ILU) and Residential Aged Care (RAC) components.

To support daily resident use and varied operational requirements, Elephants Foot Chute Solutions delivered a comprehensive suite of residential waste chute systems incorporating dual waste and recycling infrastructure for the ILU tower, alongside dedicated waste and linen systems for the RAC building.

ILU Dual Waste & Recycling Chute System
The ILU building features a high‑rise dual chute system spanning 31 levels (B1 to Level 28) for both waste and recycling streams. A total of 62 vertical runs of 510mm galvanised steel chute pipes were installed, delivering robust, fire‑compliant vertical waste transfer suitable for high‑occupancy residential use.

Fire‑rated, self‑closing waste and recycling intake doors were installed across operational levels 6 to 28, with bypass levels integrated from B1 to Level 5 to align with architectural and service coordination requirements. Two vent and wash‑down cleaning systems were installed at Level 28 to support airflow, hygiene and odour management.

At Basement Level 2, discharge occurs into dual 1100L MGB linear track systems (no compactor), providing structured bin handling and efficient servicing logistics. A subsequent variation introduced a compactor solution to suit 1100L bins within the ILU building, enhancing operational capacity.

A dedicated safety upgrade was implemented within the ILU discharge room, including upgraded control units, automatic Type‑A door cut‑off actuators and coded magnetic switches linked to the roller shutter. This configuration ensures both chute discharge doors automatically close when the caretaker enters the room, improving operational safety and system control.

RAC Waste Chute System
The RAC building includes a separate waste chute system servicing five levels (UG to Level 4). Constructed using 510mm galvanised steel pipework, the system incorporates side‑hinged, fire‑rated intake doors and acoustic lagging upgrades to minimise operational noise — an important consideration in aged care environments.

A dedicated vent and wash‑down system was installed at Level 4, with discharge configured via a Type‑A bottom discharge door to suit 1100L MGB handling at Lower Ground level.

RAC Linen Chute System
To maintain separation between waste and clinical laundry streams, a purpose‑built linen chute system was installed within the RAC building, servicing six levels (LG to Level 4). Fire‑rated, side‑hinged linen intake doors were installed on operational floors, with bypass levels incorporated where required.

The linen system includes acoustic lagging, a dedicated vent and wash‑down cleaning system, and a Type‑A bottom discharge door to suit a selected linen trolley (TBC). A variation also upgraded the vent pipe diameter to 150mm to improve airflow performance.

Across both ILU and RAC components, The Cambridge installation integrates high‑rise dual waste streams, aged care‑specific acoustic treatments, safety‑enhanced discharge rooms, and structured 1100L MGB handling systems. The result is a coordinated apartment waste management infrastructure designed to support operational efficiency, hygiene, compliance and long‑term building performance across a complex multi‑use residential development.
