Merri Northcote - Dual Waste and Recycling Chute System Installation

Merri Northcote is a multi-residential development by Brady Constructions, located at 11 High Street, Northcote, in Melbourne’s inner north. Positioned within a vibrant and well-connected urban precinct, the development comprises six residential buildings of varying heights, each requiring an individually configured waste management solution to suit its specific layout and occupancy demands.

Elephants Foot Chute Solutions supplied and installed six dual waste and recycling chute systems across all six buildings, providing separate waste and recycling streams at every intake level. The systems enable efficient waste transfer across multiple levels, reduce manual handling for building management, and support well-organised waste room operations throughout the development.
The installation spans 64 chute pipe levels in total across all six buildings, with 32 fire-rated self-closing waste intake doors and 32 fire-rated self-closing recycling intake doors installed across all operational levels. All 64 intake doors were upgraded with medium temperature smoke seals, providing an additional layer of fire and smoke containment compliance throughout the development. Building 1 is the tallest core, servicing ground floor through to level 7 with discharge to basement 1. Buildings 2 and 4 discharge to basement 2, while Buildings 3, 5, and 6 discharge to basement 1.

Acoustic lagging using a 25mm thick 5kg/m2 barrier bonded to convoluted foam was applied to all 64 chute pipe sections across all six buildings, minimising noise transmission through the building structure and supporting a quieter residential environment for occupants throughout the development.

Minor offset discharge configurations were installed for both waste and recycling streams in Buildings 1, 2, 3, and 6, while medium offset discharge configurations were installed in Buildings 4 and 5, each configured to suit 1,100L MGBs. All discharge configurations are tailored to the specific waste room geometry of each building.

Odour relief vent and flushing spray systems were installed at the top of each chute shaft across all six buildings, discharging through to open air at a maximum of 3,000mm above the head of each chute to support airflow management, odour control, and internal chute hygiene. Six reusable slab penetration ring formers were also supplied to support accurate chute penetration installation throughout the development.

The completed installation provides Brady Constructions with a durable, compliant, and acoustically considered waste and recycling infrastructure solution tailored to the scale and configuration of Merri Northcote, supporting reliable long-term performance across all six residential buildings.
