188 Grenfell Street is a purpose-built student accommodation development by Synergy Construct Australia, located in the heart of the Adelaide CBD adjacent to the heritage-listed Crown and Anchor Hotel. Developed by Wee Hur Holdings and designed by Brown Falconer, the 29-storey tower delivers 645 student accommodation rooms within close proximity to the University of Adelaide and University of South Australia, requiring a high-capacity and compliant waste management solution suited to the demands of a large-scale student accommodation environment.
Elephants Foot Chute Solutions supplied and installed a dual waste and recycling chute system across 28 chute pipe levels, with 28 fire-rated self-closing waste intake doors and 28 recycling intake doors installed at every operational level. Eight custom chute support brackets were fabricated and installed across the lower levels to suit site-specific structural conditions, with levels above coordinated to standard Elephants Foot chute and penetration set-out detail throughout the remainder of the shaft. The discharge room is located at ground level.
The ground level discharge room is fitted with medium offset discharge configurations for both waste and recycling streams to suit 1,100L MGBs, a linear compactor system to suit a 1,100L waste MGB, and a linear system to suit a 1,100L recycling MGB. This combination of compaction and linear track equipment supports high-volume waste and recycling management suited to the occupancy demands of a 645-room student accommodation tower.
Odour relief vent and flushing spray systems were installed at the top of both chute shafts, discharging through to open air at a maximum of 3,000mm above the head of each chute to support airflow management, odour control, and internal chute hygiene throughout the full height of the building.
The completed installation provides Synergy Construct Australia with a durable, compliant, and high-capacity waste infrastructure solution tailored to the scale and operational demands of 188 Grenfell Street, supporting efficient building operations within one of Adelaide’s most significant student accommodation developments.
