
Prime Tower is a high rise residential development located within Melbourne’s Southbank precinct, positioned in a dense urban environment requiring efficient and compliant vertical waste infrastructure. Delivered for Melcorp, the project involved the staged replacement and upgrade of existing chute components to improve durability, compliance, and long term system reliability within a high occupancy residential tower.
Elephants Foot Chute Solutions undertook a comprehensive dual waste chute system replacement program across Levels 1 to 9, focusing on upgrading the existing recycling chute from plastic to 510mm galvanised steel construction. All masonry on the recycling chute side was removed and reinstated using compliant panel systems, and the shaft was cleaned and sanitised prior to installation to ensure safe and hygienic conditions.
The recycling discharge was removed and replaced with a new heavy‑duty galvanised steel offset, improving structural integrity and long term wear resistance within the discharge room. Existing hopper doors were temporarily removed and reinstated following completion of works, maintaining fire compliance while enabling efficient upgrade staging.
In addition to the recycling chute replacement, a new offset and hopper configuration was designed and manufactured for the general waste stream. The new offset/hopper assembly was fabricated from 8–10mm steel for enhanced durability and incorporated targeted acoustic lagging to impact zones to reduce operational noise transmission. Design and engineering review was undertaken prior to fabrication to ensure compliance with BCA requirements, Australian Standards, and project specifications.
All works were completed under safe work methodologies with temporary wall and floor protection systems in place throughout the installation. Compliance certification was provided on completion, along with extended warranty coverage for the newly installed galvanised chute sections.
The completed upgrade delivers Melcorp a strengthened and modernised chute infrastructure solution, improving discharge durability, enhancing compliance performance, and supporting reliable long term waste handling efficiency within a high rise residential environment.
