Dual Waste and Recycling Chute System Installation

Gadsden is a mixed-use residential development by Hamilton and Marino Builders, located at 17-37 Abbotsford Street, West Melbourne VIC, on the doorstep of Melbourne’s CBD. The development comprises two residential buildings of differing heights, each requiring an individually configured dual waste and recycling chute system to suit its specific layout and operational requirements.

Elephants Foot Chute Solutions was engaged to supply and install two dual waste and recycling chute systems across Buildings A and B, providing a combined total of 30 chute pipe levels and 26 fire-rated self-closing intake doors installed across all operational levels. All 26 intake doors received a medium temperature smoke seal upgrade, providing enhanced fire and smoke containment compliance across both buildings. Both systems discharge to basement 1, each fitted with two Type A bottom discharge doors configured to suit 1,100L MGBs for the waste and recycling streams respectively.

Building A is the larger core, servicing 12 waste and 12 recycling chute pipe levels including a roof level intake, with fire-rated self-closing intake doors installed at every operational level. An integrated single bin compactor was installed at basement 1 for the waste stream, supporting efficient waste compaction within the basement waste room. Building B services three waste and three recycling chute pipe levels, with bypass configurations incorporated at ground floor and level 1 for both streams and intake doors installed at level 2 only.

Vent and wash-down cleaning systems were installed at the top of all four chute shafts across both buildings, discharging through to open air on the level above to support airflow management, odour control, and internal chute hygiene throughout each shaft.

The completed installation provides Hamilton and Marino Builders with a durable, compliant, and practically configured waste and recycling infrastructure solution suited to the scale and character of Gadsden, supporting efficient building operations and reliable long-term performance within one of Melbourne’s most dynamic inner-city precincts.
