Fortunately, with so much discussion around creating a circular economy and being socially responsible, many companies are first looking to re-use or recycle what by-products they can. The unwanted by-products of industrial processes are referred to as industrial waste. Mining, manufacturing and textile production are a few examples of industries that produce a lot of industrial waste, some of which can be potentially hazardous. Effective waste management looks for methods of safely removing and disposing of this waste. At Elephants Foot we have a plethora of services that focus entirely on industrial waste management. To find out how we can help you dispose of your industrial waste, read on!

1. Segregation

Glass, plastic and paper are industrial waste that is recyclable. As suchthese should be segregated from other wastes such as bio-degradable waste, hazardous waste and solid non-hazardous waste. For the most effective management of differing waste streams, separate receptacles should be provided for each identified waste stream. This can be in the form of mobile garbage bins, glass crushers, balers, etc.

2. Composting

Some industries produce bio-degradable waste which can be used to make compost. Cardboard, leaves, food waste, sawdust and newspapers fall into this category. Composting this waste produces a product which can be added to the soil to enrich it with many nutrients. Importantly, composting removes materials from landfill, reducing the production of methane gas and thus improving the environment.

3. Hazardous Waste

Hazardous waste can be common with industrial waste and must be handled appropriately. Any waste deemed hazardous will have appropriate controls to its management and disposal. Any movement of a hazardous material must be tracked and reported to ensure disposal is handled appropriately and the waste is treated/stored appropriately.

4. Utilisation of landfills

A landfill is an area where waste is compacted and buried. Only after waste is segregated and all other avenues of disposal have been exhausted, should waste be sent to landfill for disposal. The buried waste degrades over time and produces unwanted gases, and there is limited space available for landfill. Therefore, we need to be thinking of how we can minimise and reduce industrial wastes before considering landfill as an option.

5. Recruiting a waste management firm

Not every company has the capability of handling their own waste. This is when the services of waste management company like Elephants Foot comes in. Industrial waste has the potential to harm the environment.Making a conscious decision to dispose of waste in a responsible manner is doing your part for the environment. Manufacturers operate under policies which dictate that they dispose of their waste in a way that will prevent pollution of the surrounding environment. Violating these laws will result in costly fines and reparations which can be avoided by just disposing of waste in an appropriate manner.
