A chute is a vertical shaft that allows residents to dispose of materials and waste from several floors. Users simply deposit their waste into a chute door, and gravity transports it down to a central collection point, typically in a waste room or basement.
Waste chutes are commonly used for general waste, mixed recycling, and organics (FOGO). Chutes are also highly effective for laundry and linen. Some buildings may have multiple chutes for different waste streams to ensure proper sorting, recycling or other light materials. However, hazardous or bulky items should not be placed in the chute, as they can cause damage or blockages.
The eDiverter® technology automatically switches between waste streams (e.g., general waste, recycling, or organics) within a single chute system. This allows buildings to use one chute for multiple waste types, improving space efficiency and ensuring proper waste segregation.
Blockages can be prevented by educating users on what can and cannot be disposed of in the chute, installing appropriately sized hopper doors to discourage large items, and performing regular maintenance to keep the chute clean and clear of debris.
Chute systems often include key safety features such as fire-rated self-closing hoppers on intake levels and non-combustible cut-off doors at the base of the chute fitted with fusible links that close off the chutes at the point of discharge in case of a fire.
Other safety features may include odour and smoke seals, tamper-proof locking systems, and sensor-based bin monitoring to prevent overfilling.
